Within walking distance of Les Vigères is the small and picturesque village of Le Chalard with its fascinating 11th century fortified church and medieval cemetery. Situated on the famous Richard the Lionheart trail, the village is steeped in history, as the monastery played an important role in the crusades.

During the 100yrs war between the English and the French, the village was occupied by the English army and as to this day a building that served as their headquarters is known as the La Maison Des Anglais. The local goldmine, originating from pre-roman times, has been active until quite recent times and produced 2 tonnes of gold per year. Gold particles are present in all the local streams and rivers .

The village of Le Chalard is a very relaxing place to go for a stroll on a summer evening or to simply explore its history.
